Weights & Measures Serviceman / Agency Registration

It is unlawful for a business to use weighing or measuring devices that have not been tested, approved and sealed using certified and traceable standards. The reason for a serviceman / agency is, it would be unfair for businesses to wait for the limited number of state inspectors to test their devices each time service is performed on them.

The Serviceman / Agency Registration program sets conditions for private agencies to perform service, repair or replacement of weighing or measuring devices and return them to commercial service until a state inspector can arrange to inspect the device. In order to qualify for this status, a service agency must have traceable and accurate standards, and service agencies must certify that each agent who performs work is trained in the applicable area of expertise, possess a copy of HB130, NCWM Publication 12 and a copy of NIST HB44. Although more notice is required for some installations, service agents are required to notify the Weights & Measures office within 24 hours of conducting repairs or service to devices. Additionally, agents must affix a registered security seal to devices which prevents tampering until official re-inspection by Weights & Measures takes place. No device may be used without security seals being in place.
